In 1852, Frederick Douglass delivered an Independence Day address to the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society, asking, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”
There are at least three notable recordings of this speech: one by Mr Douglass's descendants, one by James Earl Jones, and one by Ossie Davis.
